Getting Started

Earn College Credit

College Students

Just by taking 8 – 10 of your regular private lessons, you can earn credit for one of the following Bellevue College music courses: 140, 143, 240, and 243.  Your lessons won’t change or cost more, but you will have to get enrolled in the BC course and give a private “jury” performance at the end of the quarter.  This means that during a regular school year, you could be earning six university credits just by taking lessons at RMI. Contact us to find out more.

Online Lessons

We are accepting students for on-line distance guitar study. One-hour private lessons and special classes will be offered over the Internet using Skype audio/video. Private lessons are offered now in three scheduling options. One-per week, every-other week and “one off” or occasional lessons.

Free test lesson and interview.

When you have signed up for on-line lessons, We will schedule a test lesson so you can get acquainted and discuss the subjects you want to study. It will also be a good time to test out your system making sure we can see and hear each other in the best possible manner. Following the test lesson, we may email you PDF and mp3 files to prepare for your first lessons.

Your System Must Have:

  • Skype for PC or Mac (http://www.skype.com/download/) (free, no cost)
  • Video camera and mic either built-in or connected to your computer
  • Fast internet connection either cable or DSL.

Downloading and setting up Skype is very easy and only takes a few minutes. You will create a free account with a user name and password. Once you are set up, Skype works like a phone where you simply call the person you want to talk to.

You may want to enhance your on-line lessons by connecting your sound system to your computer, or use a head-set/mic. Skype has a cool little audio test-call feature where you can test your audio system. You will want Don to be able to clearly hear your voice and your guitar. A guitar amp placed near you, which will get picked up by your computers mic, might work fine. If you choose to use a audio mixer or system, you can mic the amp in addition to a voice mic sent to the mixer, then to your computers audio input. You may also want to set-up your video camera to get the best quality shot such as additional lighting if needed.

At the end of each quarter RMI holds a performance at a local venue in order to showcase our student’s hard work and talent. Video clips are made available and some even make it on our RMI youtube page.

Each and every one of RMI’s Instructors are also professional musicians and quite often record music outside of school. You can find examples from Instructors and Students on the RMI Music page.

Class schedules

RMI offers several learning formats.

Player’s Clubs: All students are encouraged to join a Player’s Club to develop their skills as a performer and play in a band environment. Player’s Club bands typically consist of 4 to 6 musicians, and are open to all instruments. All bands will perform at least once. We have Player’s Clubs for genres (blues, jazz, metal, classic rock, etc.) as well as Player’s Clubs which are focused on specific bands (Pink Floyd, British Invasion, Surf, etc.). Check out all of our Player’s Clubs.

Group Classes: Students work with an instructor and focus on their area of interest. We offer a wide range of classes that focus on technique, the blues, fusion, rock, acoustic, theory, and more. See all classes.

Private Lessons: 6 days a week RMI has a wide range of instructors, specializing in all styles. Check out our instructors to find a teacher that interests you.

Lessons are ½ hr (30min) or 1 hr. The one on one format is good for custom tailoring a program around your needs. Many students prefer at least a ½ hr private and a one hour Player’s Club per week, to fulfill a well rounded approach.

Our talented instructors are fluent in all modern musical genres from Traditional Jazz and Classical to Blues and Hard Rock.

RMI is a one of a kind music school and is designed to open the door to the artistic, creative and technical side of contemporary musicianship. Students will learn exactly what it takes to be a successful player in any style. Special emphasis will aim at dispelling myths about learning to play, help students focus on their individual goals and to develop a productive practice regimen. This is a “playing / hands-on” music school where students are encouraged to play their instruments in many of the classes and participate in the ensembles and performances.

Private Lessons & Player’s Clubs are offered weekly throughout the year. Classes are designed to be 10 weeks long, running parallel to the quarterly school year including summer quarter. To help us determine your ideal placement and get you started today, please fill out our free Skill Level Evaluation Form (Click here to start). We will evaluate it promptly and contact you to schedule a time to visit the school and meet the staff.
