Robben Ford will present a master class on guitar and music theory for beginning and intermediate level musicians on Saturday, April 30, 2011. The class will focus on the basic building blocks of music theory, chord progressions, the use of voicings, listening and improvisation.
There will be an emphasis on the importance of the blues in building a strong musical foundation, as well as the understanding and usage of advanced harmony to add dimension to simple music forms and chord progressions. The guitar will be featured, but beginning and mid-level students of any instrument would benefit from this class.

Books, teaching videos, and CDs will be available for purchase.
Hand-held audio recording devices will be permitted in the class.

Bryan Beller has maintained a frenetic, multi-faceted career as a bassist, composer, writer and clinician for nearly twenty years, earning a reputation as a uniquely talented yet supremely tasteful hired gun bassist for adventurous rock guitarists and singer/songwriters alike. He was Steve Vai’s choice on bass for the live CD/DVD Where The Wild Things Are, a tour-de-force document of the six-piece Vai live band Beller anchored on bass throughout 2007. Other recent touring work includes the “band” Dethklok, a tongue-in-cheek extreme metal band borne of the hit Cartoon Network “Adult Swim” show Metalocalypse.

The dominant 7th gives music movement, energy, and tension. This powerful clinic will expand your understanding of not only the familiar “V” dominant 7th, but all the secondary dominant 7ths in major and minor keys. Join Don Mock as he builds “master scales” for each dominant 7th, demonstrates the best voicings, and explains the theory behind how they function. You’ll explore extensions and alterations of dominants, as well as the two basic ways dominants operate, “static” and “functioning.” The included progressions and tunes give you a chance to practice, and sample solos demonstrate the correct scales, arpeggios and melodies. Discover why the study of dominant 7ths offers you the “keys to the kingdom” for truly understanding the workings of music.

Developing a strong jazz vocabulary is the first step to improvising like a pro. Corey Christiansen teaches you how to acquire an original voice by using lines and phrases played by the masters. You will see tremendous growth in your improvisational skills by attending this workshop. Bring your guitar!

DISCOVERING a GROOVE with CHORD MELODY

Using a simple tune to illustrate the process, Ben Lacy will demonstrate his approach to creating a chord melody with the groove and feel in place. Additional techniques will include funk slapping and drumistic techniques applied to the guitar. Students will be encouraged to participate and give feedback to help create their own arrangements. Learn to expand your groove vocabulary and chord melody skills in a relaxed atmosphere.

~Open to all levels~

Using a simple standard to illustrate the process, John Stowell will demonstrate his approach to creating a chord melody. In addition to explanations of voicings and voice leading, John will play the same tune as a chord melody with two or three levels of difficulty.

Additional techniques will include open string voicings, modulations, pedal points, and internal voice movements. Students will be encouraged to participate and give feedback to create arrangements of their own.

Learn to expand your chord vocabulary and chord melody skills in a relaxed atmosphere.

John will also perform a concert after the clinic with some very special guests!
