The first time I saw Jay and Ben was at the annual NAMM (music) tradeshow in Nashville about 4 years ago. At the time, I wasn’t familiar with either of them, and I certainly hadn’t heard them play together. But their description in the show program looked intriguing, so I sat down in front of them in a small room, thinking I’d videotape a little of their performance. After about 30 seconds, I had to set the camera down. I felt a bit out of control. Never before in my seemingly endless pursuit of great guitar playing – and never since – have I been so floored. We’re talking moved by their musicianship to the point of tearing up.
Pocket Deuce captures the same spirit that blew me away that day. It’s just two guys, two brains, four hands and 20 fingers, but you’d never believe it without seeing it for yourself. Call it intuitive chemistry or a symbiotic musical kinship … call it anything you’d like, but don’t pass up any opportunity to listen to the special magic these two create. Live or recorded live, Jay and Ben lay down alarmingly nasty rhythmic grooves, soaring and tasty leads, sweet melodic jazz lines, a big ‘ol pile of funk, and plenty of lyric-less humor. And where else are you gonna find Wes Montgomery, the Eagles, Charlie Parker and a 70’s disco tune (that you suddenly dig) – all on the same record? These guys are obviously having a ton of fun, and it’s infectious. I can’t wait for the next one!
